To achieve certification each serice undergoes a manual technical compliance review against WCAG 2.2 to level AA.

The service underwent both a technical compliance audit and robust end to end testing by users with a wide range of disabilities including blind, low vision, dyslexia, colour blindness, mobility impairments, learning difficulties, Deaf, Asperger and anxiety and panic disorder.

All testing is carried out in line with relevant platform specific guidelines, and where applicable, conforms with The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No.2) Accessibility Regulations 2018. Testing also conforms to Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

List of issues

There are no known accessibility issues at High or Medium Priority (WCAG 2.2 Single and Double A)

At Low Priority (WCAG 2.2 AAA)

  • Colours used failed to meet the ratios required to meet WCAG 2.2 AAA.
  • Links opened in new tabs without informing the user, while also being unclear of their purpose when encountered out of context.
  • Abbreviations were used without being expanded.
  • Links opened in new tabs without informing the user.
  • Some content was not organised by page headings, impacting screen reader users’ understanding of the page.

Usability Issues (Non-WCAG)

  • Hint text was referenced using IDs which were not present on the page.
  • Form grouping was used unnecessarily, potentially impacting how screen reader users understand page content.
  • Some components were not compatible with assistive technologies, although they followed the GOV.UK Design System.
  • Some error skip links did not take users to the associated input fields.
  • Back links were not positioned correctly within page markup.
  • Links were found not to follow the GOV.UK Design System link style, impacting accessibility.
  • Some pages were not uniquely titled.
